I am 3 credits short of a minor in communications. Want to know why? I refused to take public speaking which was a requirement. I am going to be a nurse. I don't need public speaking. Bless my young heart.
I was terrified of public speaking. If I had only had some tricks up my sleeve to help me deal with the anxiety. As it turns out, I have done a lot of public speaking throughout my nursing career. But to do this, I had to learn to effectively manage my anxiety. One of my favorite ways to balance my nervous system (and manage anxiety) is Alternate Nostril Breathing.
Benefits of Alternate Nostril Breathing
When we are stressed (like when we have to speak in public), we tend to take small, shallow breaths. Alternate Nostril Breathing allows us to be more mindful of our breathing and has many health benefits. It can:
Relax your body and mind
Reduce anxiety and depression
Decrease heart rate and blood pressure
Can be done anywhere, anytime
To try this technique yourself (and hopefully implement it into your daily routine) watch this video from Yoga with Adriene. She does a fabulous job of teaching. I think you will find it's easier that you might expect!
